The Way of the WASP: New England Summer Colonies
Growing up, camps, stables, and prep schools were important. But summer colonies were more binding still.
WASPy New England was defined in part by its summer colonies, dotted along the shoreline up and down the coast from Connecticut to Maine. I have spent a lot of time in quite a few throughout my life.
These were often ground zero for the communities that shaped people’s lives. The unwritten codes of behavior were imprinted on youngsters here, even before exposure to similarly cultured prep schools and the WASPiest of the summer camps.
