Over the years on the blog I have been asked countless times “What is the preppiest state?” Here is my countdown, from least to most.

#3. Maine

Maine is often called the last bastion of WASP. The least changed and the most pure. Where the smells of woodsmoke, pine and salt water are inexorably intertwined. The water is the bluest and the air is the clearest. (From what other New England state would you want to eat the fish?)

Many see Maine as mythical. When they dream of escaping, they dream of escaping to there. They dream of sailing along the coast, they dream of having a “camp” up in the north woods in the shadows of Katahdin, or a sprawling summer cottage on the rocky shores.
